Home Bedding
71Almost everyone loves to have great home bedding. You spend so much of your life sleeping in your bed so why not get something that you love. To do this you’ll need to concentrate on four areas. You’ll need to determine the style and design of your bedding, how to want to purchase your bedding for the home, and what type of quality you’re after. I’ll also let you in on a little known trick that the home bedding stores don’t want you to know about. Because the bed is often the focal point of room getting these three elements done correctly can have a large impact on the overall feel of the room. If get home bedding that suits the entire room, then everything else seems to fall into place.
Bedding Pattern and Style
This is one of the biggest factors when considering what type of bedding to buy. You need to analyse what type of room you currently have, what you envision it to look like, and how you want to create that vision. You can shop for the new home trends bedding or go for something more classical. The bed is often the focal point of a room so getting the right bedding is crucial to making the room look how you envision it.
Some Style Tips -
Buy two sets of home bedding: Different sets of bedding can great for the different seasons. A neutral cooler coloured set (light blues and whites) is great for the summer while vibrant and warmer colours (reds and oranges) are great for the winter.
Try to match the dominate colour: Identify the dominate colour in your room and buy bedding to suit.
Use the bed to balance the room: If your room is full of many different vibrant colours you could consider a black and white bedding pattern to balance the room and create contrast. Similarly if your room has a very neutral décor use linen that has pattern or colour to make it a focal point of the room. You could even do something slightly crazy like buying rodeo home bedding.
How to Buy Bedding
There are two main ways to get the bedding you need. You can either buy it separately, each piece on its own, or you can buy a bedding set (also known as a bed in a bag). A bedding set is one big set of sheets, pillow covers, quilt covers, etc, already pre-packaged and chosen for you. The advantage of this is that it is convenient because they have taken out all the guess work for you and already found matching pieces and it can sometimes be cheaper as they sell many of the same type of packages. The drawback of this approach is the limited choice and variety. This is why many people choose to buy their bed linen individually. This way they have a large degree of control and variety when buying each piece so they can get exactly what they need.
Thread Count
I am sure if you’re reading this then you think you understand thread count, but there is a small misleading catch that the home store bedding places don’t want you to know about. First of all let me go over what thread count really is.
Thread count refers to the amount of thread per square inch. General the higher the thread count the higher the quality. The thread count can range anywhere from 80 to 1200. The threads used in a very high thread count sheet are very small and fine. This results in a sheet that is generally of very high quality and is very soft. It is for this reason that luxury bed linen always uses a high thread count. One thing that I should point out is that a high thread count sheet is very delicate because of the fine threads used. For this reason extreme care should be used especially when washing, always follow the instruction. These sheets are very expensive and can sometimes be easily ruined.
The misleading part of all this comes into play when you have to consider ply. Ply is the amount of threads which are twisted together to create a fibre which is then used to make the fabric. It’s for this reason that thread count can be misleading. A high thread count is not necessarily a high thread count in the pure sense. A 1200TC sheet can actually be a 330TC 3 ply sheet, or a 250TC 4 ply sheet. A 500TC sheet is the highest (true) thread count that you can achieve. The only way to get a higher count is be adding more ply. One note on ply that should be mentioned is that a high ply sheet will create more pilling (the little balls that form on your sheets). But a high ply is not always a very bad thing. Some people prefer a high ply sheet because it is thicker and heavier, which is great during the winter months. Either way just make sure you understand exactly what you’re buying.
